IBM Advances to Stage B of DARPA’s Quantum Computing Initiative
IBM has secured a pivotal position in the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) Quantum Benchmarking Initiative, progressing to Stage B of the three-phase program. The initiative, launched in 2024, aims to determine the feasibility of constructing a cost-effective, fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2033.
Jay Gambetta, Director of IBM Research, emphasized the significance of this milestone, calling it a validation of IBM's approach to scalable quantum systems. Participants in Stage B are required to submit detailed R&D plans, addressing both technical execution and potential risks.
DARPA's selection process underscores the competitive landscape of quantum computing development, with IBM now positioned as a leading contender in the race to deliver operational quantum advantage.
